THE PROBLEM
As of end January 2022, there are 181,510 refugees and asylum-seekers registered with UNHCR in Malaysia. Malaysia is not a party of the 1951 Refugee Convention, and has no domestic or administrative framework that governs refugees and their rights.
This leads to many problems faced by the refugees in Malaysia such as:
No legal protection
No access to public education
No healthcare privileges
No respect from the public
THE SOLUTION
Empowering Equalities is a 4-week project started by AIESEC in Sunway that focuses on facilitating the learning opportunities for refugees' children and also raising awareness on the issues that the vulnerable community face to the general public. During the period of 4 weeks, we will be conducting 4 workshops that focus on developing important skills for refugee children to integrate into society. We will be conducting panel discussions and interviews for the general public knowledge on the refugee status quo here in Malaysia. To add on, we will also be creating two Public Service Announcement videos which will be uploaded on our instagram page @inclusion_malaysia. Last but not least, this crowdfunding initiative is to assist refugee learning centers with their operations to provide education and to sustain our project in the long run.
THE IMPACT
With Empowering Equalities, we are able to reduce the negative stigma of the refugee community to the general public. Not only that, we are also able to develop life skills for the future employability for refugee youths by:
- Developing public speaking skills
- Better development of English skills
- Expansion on their field of communication
