As of October 2022, nearly 200K asylum seekers were registered with UNHCR in Malaysia. Many remain undocumented. Malaysia is not a signatory of the 1951 Refugee Convention and does not have a legal or administrative system that protects the rights of refugees leaving them subject to numerous forms of violence and discrimination as well as a lack of access to healthcare, education and other basic human rights. Refugee students cannot access public schools. There are several refugee schools run across the country, for their students. However, they are short on funds and have very limited resources, and often cannot accommodate the many asylum-seeking students that find themselves in Malaysia.
Empowering Equalities 11.0 is a 4-week project started by AIESEC in Sunway which focuses on facilitating the learning opportunities of refugee children, assisting their integration into Malaysian society and raising awareness about the issues faced by the refugee community to the general public. In this period of 4 weeks, AIESEC in Sunway will be conducting workshops to teach refugee children skills and knowledge that are useful when integrating into society. Furthermore, we will also be conducting various activities such as having panel discussions, organising a bazaar and conducting street interviews on the university campus with an aim to raise awareness about the refugee status quo to the public.
In addition to our initiative, we would like to conduct a crowdfunding initiative to ensure that the activities that we conduct are sustainable and able to ensure that refugee children will still be able to gain access to proper education despite the pandemic period. Therefore, the funds collected will be donated to the refugee learning centres to fund the refugee children’s learning and also for our operations so that our movement is sustainable over the years to come.
Through Empowering Equalities, we will be able to reduce the negative stigma of the refugee community in the perception of the general public. Furthermore, it also allows the refugee kids to develop useful skills for their future employability by assisting them in their integration into Malaysian society by understanding the community around them and expanding their knowledge field.

Our Identity
AIESEC is the world's largest non-profit youth-run organization. It is an international non-governmental not-for-profit organisation that provides young people with leadership development, cross-cultural global internships, and volunteer exchange experiences across the globe. The organization focuses on empowering young leaders to make a positive impact on society through actions.
Our Vision
AIESEC strives for Peace and Fulfilment of Humankind's Potential as an organisation.
In today’s context, ‘Peace’ does not necessarily mean only avoiding war. Peace can symbolise a world that does not have conflicts that arise from cultural, religious, or other aspects of differences in humanity. Peace can also symbolise being in harmony with yourself. AIESEC strives to build a world where people can work towards their own understanding of peace while respecting and understanding the views of others.
Through Fulfilment of Humankind’s Potential, AIESEC strives for a world where people can be the best version of themselves.
Our Action
We place our confidence in youth because they have the passion, dynamism and entrepreneurial spirit that are needed to shape the future. They have the responsibility to improve tomorrow by choosing who they will be today. Hence, AIESEC is a platform for young leaders to run projects that are aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to ensure its relevance to the local community needs. We aim to be part of the solution for a betterment of Malaysia.
