The Story

Education is a fundamental human right for all children - including refugees.

We are the Malaysian Youth Volunteers for Empowering Equalities Project from AIESEC in Sunway. This project aims to support the refugee community in Malaysia, by assisting learning centers, offering voluntary support, crowdfunding, and raising public awareness on the issue.

As of the end of June 2022, there are about 47,200 refugee children below the age of 18 registered with UNHCR in Malaysia. These children are facing many barriers to access to the formal education system, especially problems such as citizenship requirements, lack of funding, and poverty. They can't attend public school and could only receive some form of education at learning centers sustained through private funding or grants.

In Kuala Lumpur, Samana Ahmadi, a 22-year-old Afghan refugee, fled to Malaysia five years ago to seek safety. Since then, she has been teaching refugees and underprivileged Malaysians in KL at an NGO education project. She wishes to provide education to more women and girls so that they have the knowledge and the skill to live independently. She also hopes that all the refugees in Malaysia could pursue higher education and reach their goals. (Source: UNHCR)

In the residential area where I stay, there is a man from Palestine. He came here to escape the war in his country 10 years ago. He had been staying at a refugee center for more than 5 years. He works as a waiter in a restaurant. Although he doesn’t earn much, he still donates money to refugee centers. He understands the difficult situation of the refugees in those refugee centers. His act inspires me to help the refugees.

Through this project, we equip the children with knowledge and skills to live independently in the future and succeed in their life. By donating to our campaign, you could also be the one who makes an impact on the refugee community in Malaysia.

Even the smallest gift to charity can make a huge impact.
