THE PROBLEM

A quality education is one of the important needs for the students in this neo generation. Schools are providing education for the students to develop many skills, but communications skills and technical skills are not focused in the education system and it is not focused in the education provided by the government. Students these days are struggling to read and write which leads to communications issues in the future. In addition, everything these days are shifting into Neo Technology. In a few years, robotics will be revolving around the workforce, showing how the society will be progressing as a whole. The question is, how can we understand Technology when we’re lacking in reading, writing and technical skills?

Unemployment rate is increasing day by day and statistics show that 3.9% of fresh graduates are unemployed because they are not well versed in communicating in English. English Language is an important language for this and the upcoming generation as the language is widely used for communication in the workforce. Still, there are students who have the fear of speaking up , and if this continues in a few years’ time, many citizens will be lacking in competence, hence will increase the unemployment rate in Malaysia. Moreover, many schools in Malaysia do not have the right facilities and resources to teach the students, which is one of the reasons why students these days are falling back.

THE SOLUTION

Speak Up is a project started by AIESEC in Malaysia back in 2015. Speak Up is a 4 – 6 weeks project where we are focusing on providing STEM education for the youths to develop their vocational and technical skills.  This project was carried out physically,  but due to COVID-19, the project will be conducted virtually for the government secondary students in January 2021.

Despite the fact that the project is carried out virtually, it is proven to be effective considering the fact that the project was carried out in July to August 2020. A similar impact was brought upon the community and AIESEC in Sunway would like to further increase the impact with better resources and capabilities. AIESEC in Sunway will be conducting weekly workshops for the government secondary students, which focuses on public speaking skills and workshops that focus on STEM as well. The workshops are conducted by volunteers recruited by AIESEC in Sunway. Below is breakdown on activities carried out weekly:

THE IMPACT

Many teachers and students have noticed changes in their English proficiency level after participating in the Speak Up project. After witnessing the results and positive impact, many students and teachers have encouraged more students to participate in the Speak Up project. We believe your support and trust will help us to expand the project and to reach out to more schools too.

When people hear the word SPEAK UP, they think it is just a talk which goes on for 2 hours and that’s all. Speak Up is a project where people and students can develop themselves in speaking English and learn about STEM. Not just that, they will polish up their public speaking skills too. Through this project they will benefit of public speaking, which is:

  • Self-empowerment

  • Development in Leadership Skills

  • Strengthening Thinking Skills

They will also learn and improve soft skills like:

  • Teamwork

  • Communication Skills

  • Problem-solving Skills

  • Leadership

  • Interpersonal Skills

About the Organization/Project behind this Campaign

AIESEC in Sunway

Our Identity

AIESEC is the world's largest non-profit youth-run organization. It is an international non-governmental not-for-profit organisation that provides young people with leadership development, cross-cultural global internships, and volunteer exchange experiences across the globe. The organization focuses on empowering young leaders to make a positive impact on society through actions.

Our Vision

AIESEC strives for Peace and Fulfilment of Humankind's Potential as an organisation.

In today’s context, ‘Peace’ does not necessarily mean only avoiding war. Peace can symbolise a world that does not have conflicts that arise from cultural, religious, or other aspects of differences in humanity. Peace can also symbolise being in harmony with yourself. AIESEC strives to build a world where people can work towards their own understanding of peace while respecting and understanding the views of others.

Through Fulfilment of Humankind’s Potential, AIESEC strives for a world where people can be the best version of themselves.

Our Action

We place our confidence in youth because they have the passion, dynamism and entrepreneurial spirit that are needed to shape the future. They have the responsibility to improve tomorrow by choosing who they will be today. Hence, AIESEC is a platform for young leaders to run projects that are aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to ensure its relevance to the local community needs. We aim to be part of the solution for a betterment of Malaysia.
