THE PROBLEM

Malaysian wildlife is severely under threat and siege from the constant inhuman activities by us homo sapiens - namely poaching, excessive logging, wildlife trade et cetera. While our country may be one of the most biologically diverse countries across Asia, we also hold the place of the highest numbers of species which are at risk of extinction in the wild.

There are 704 primate species in the world and 69% are critically endangered or endangered. Most of the primates become endangered is mostly because of bushmeat hunting and deforestation according to the International Primatologist Society. This is further confirmed by some facts about primate species in Malaysia:

1. Malaysia is inhabited by ≥26 nonhuman primate species from five families, one of the most diverse primate faunas on earth.

2. Unfortunately, Malaysian primates are threatened with extinction due to illegal poaching & trading, habitat loss, destruction and etc.

THE SOLUTION

PAWsitive Light aligns towards the Global Goal of SDG Target 15.7 - By 2030, Take urgent action to end poaching and trafficking of protected species of flora and fauna and address both demand and supply of illegal wildlife products.

PAWsitive Light is a 4-Weeks Volunteering Project that aims to contribute on SDG 15 - Life On Land, organized by University Students across Malaysia under Malaysia Youth Volunteer initiative from AIESEC in Malaysia. Our Volunteers are ready to commit their time and service to support a cause in building a sustainable community for a better Malaysia by contributing to the conservation of the ecosystem.

We strive to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal 15: Life on Land which aims to protect, restore, and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainable manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.

THE IMPACT

Once the PAWsitive Light 1.0 Project is completed by AIESEC in Kedah-Perlis, it is bound to have a significant impact on nocturnal mammals aligning with the goals of SDG 15: Life on Land. Our fundraising campaign and project will result in the following results:

1. Habitat preservation for nocturnal mammals

The funds will be used for habitat preservation which would provide them with a safe and undisturbed environment to hunt, rest and reproduce. It would ensure that they have access to the resources they need in order to survive, such as food and shelter. In addition, it also helps maintain the balance of their natural ecosystem.

2. Awareness campaigns

The awareness campaigns funded by the fundraising campaign would help the nocturnal mammals by educating people about their importance and the threats they face. This would lead to increased support for conservation efforts and actions to protect their habitats. It would also help promote responsible behavior, such as reducing light pollution and avoiding disturbance during their active hours.

3. Research

The funds would also be used for research purposes. Proper research would help to provide valuable insights into their behavior, ecology, and conservation needs. It would help us have a better understanding of their habitat requirements, migration patterns, and reproduction strategies. This knowledge would be crucial for conservation efforts and to develop effective strategies to protect and manage their population.

About the Organization/Project behind this Campaign

AIESEC in Kedah-Perlis

Our Identity

AIESEC is the world's largest non-profit youth-run organization. It is an international non-governmental not-for-profit organisation that provides young people with leadership development, cross-cultural global internships, and volunteer exchange experiences across the globe. The organization focuses on empowering young leaders to make a positive impact on society through actions.

Our Vision

AIESEC strives for Peace and Fulfilment of Humankind's Potential as an organisation.

In today’s context, ‘Peace’ does not necessarily mean only avoiding war. Peace can symbolise a world that does not have conflicts that arise from cultural, religious, or other aspects of differences in humanity. Peace can also symbolise being in harmony with yourself. AIESEC strives to build a world where people can work towards their own understanding of peace while respecting and understanding the views of others.

Through Fulfilment of Humankind’s Potential, AIESEC strives for a world where people can be the best version of themselves.

Our Action

We place our confidence in youth because they have the passion, dynamism and entrepreneurial spirit that are needed to shape the future. They have the responsibility to improve tomorrow by choosing who they will be today. Hence, AIESEC is a platform for young leaders to run projects that are aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to ensure its relevance to the local community needs. We aim to be part of the solution for the betterment of Malaysia.
