THE PROBLEM

A kidney failure patient has only 2 options to stay alive: 1) Undergo a kidney transplant – where a new kidney is placed in their body to take over the work of the failed kidneys; or 2) Dialysis (Haemodialysis or Peritoneal) – a process that removes  wastes & excess fluid in their blood.

While a kidney transplant is more preferable and could provide better quality of life, about 25,000 kidney patients in Malaysia are still waiting to undergo kidney transplant procedures.

The problem, however, is that the number of kidneys available for transplants are very small. This is where treatment through dialysis comes in.

THE SOLUTION

Dialysis treatment is intended to keep the patient’s health as normal as possible while the patients wait for a kidney transplant. Without functional kidneys or dialysis, toxic waste products and excess fluid would accumulate in the patient’s bodies. This is harmful and can be fatal.

We plan to raise 5 units of dialysis machines for our new centre, Pusat Dialisis NKF-Kidney Association of Sarawak/Rotary (Unit 2) in Kota Samarahan.

This new centre is located in an underserved area, 30km from Kuching, Sarawak.

We ask for your generous donations to help fund 1 dialysis machine to be placed at this location.

THE IMPACT

A dialysis machine can provide 936 dialysis sessions to patients per year. It has a life-span of between eight to ten years. The patients will endure four hours of dialysis treatment, three times a week for a chance to lead better, healthier lives.

“I am glad that I am receiving the best possible care from NKF whose staff members treat all patients with professionalism and take the trouble to lend their ears for patients to confide in. Under such circumstances, many of our concerns have been eased making us less emotionally depressed.  In addition, with the concerted efforts of the staff to facilitate greater social interaction among patients as well as staff members themselves, a friendlier and family-like atmosphere is created at the centre.” - NKF female patient, 40 years old

With no transplant in sight, she continues with her dialysis with NKF. She is really thankful to the Foundation and hopes that she will be able to live long to see all her children eventually having their families and leading meaningful lives.

Any surplus from the purchase of the dialysis machine would be allocated for the maintenance of the machine and any other operational requirements.
