Intellectual disability (ID) is defined as the limitations in cognitive skills in communication, social skills or motor skills. ID affects approximately 1% (200,000 people) of the population in Malaysia, and about 85% of those are diagnosed with mild intellectual disability, with the remaining being moderate or severe mental disability.
Children diagnosed with mild intellectual disability can be taught and nurtured by certain special needs schools or organisations to potentially grow up with competent skills to gain employment opportunities. These NGOs also care for individuals who suffer from moderate and severe moderate disability. They need relatively more care and support from their caretakers as they may find it difficult to take care of their own needs by themselves. Special care attendants, physical therapists and educators provide these individuals with the necessary care and training they need so that they are eventually able to reach their full potential and gain more opportunities for themselves in the future.
These NGOs have always given the intellectually disabled community the necessary support, acceptance and care that they need to learn how to cope with their limitations, overcome challenges they face on a day-to-day basis, and eventually build just as a rewarding life as everyone around them.
They depend on the community around them to sustain themselves and to be able to afford the facilities to take care of the disabled community of Malaysia. Our goal is to raise funds for IQ70Plus and IDA, two NGOs that have been fiercely dedicated in their efforts to support and care for individuals who struggle with intellectual disabilities. Your donations mean a lot to us, and are deeply appreciated!
