Hi potential donor, I'm Yen Ping ! A student joining ACTION FOR EQUALITY 2.0 (AFE 2.0) , the volunteering project is organised by AIESEC. AFE 2.0 has gathered a group of students working on increasing awareness of gender equality to Malaysia society based on the purpose of achieving gender equality and empower all women and girls, which is also a goal of Sustainable Development Goals - SDG 5.
People might be against gender equality because of the differences in body structure, it is the truth that we cannot oversee. However, gender equality can be achieved in equal treat, equal opportunities and equal paid. Since i was young, i kept receiving and heard message from people about what girls should and should not do.
It was about toys, i was Ben10's fan and liked to buy its watch from toyshop. However, a relative told me " you should play babie doll, don't play the watch anymore, or else you will become tomboy", this gave young me a deep impression and was always curious about why girl can't play the toy.
It was about school club, i was interested in the taekwondo club in my primary school. However, when i asked my parents to agree me to join the club, they declined, the reason they give me is girls don't need to learn this. After taekwondo club, i was interested in gymnastics club which was also in my primary school, most of the members were girls and only few guys. I still remember the guys were made joke and given a nickname - 'niang niang qiang' meaning a guy act like a girl, but it was not true, they are normal boys. This time, my parents agree to join and support me.
It is about University program, this time my parents didn’t stop me when i was telling them i want to study Software Engineering for my degree. However, when I introduce myself at events which has many non-computing program participants, or when i told my friends what i am studying, they always said and asked: "no many girls studying this program, why would you choose it ". The stereotypes of gender are here again.
All of the above motivates me to be active in activities, events or projects related to empowering women and girls, and also gender equality. Men and boys is also treated inequality in some area, however when both genders grew up, women is treated inequality in more aspects than men.
