Lend A Helping Hand to the Special Needs Community Now

The Story

Hi ! I am Li Yen, currently volunteering in project named “Get Fit, Get Inclusive 7.0” at AIESEC in Sunway. A project that aims to raise awareness of the special needs community.

Special needs are defined as individuals with disabilities that has circumstances that cause development to vary significantly from what is considered average. For example, types of special needs are Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Dyslexia (Reading Disability), Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

The reason why I joined this volunteer project was because I learned the upsetting fact that special needs are often excluded by part of society. Recent UNICEF study shows the public feels that special needs are considered disruptive in a mainstream class and stated that special needs should be hidden. I feel empathy toward the special needs.

As the saying goes, “treat others the way you want to be treated”. Special needs are human too, they will have sad feeling about harsh responses towards them too. If I’m in a difficult situation, I will feel sad if others treat me badly. Therefore, I feel that it would be nice if I get to interact with them and contribute my help to the special needs community.

As, I’m volunteering in Get Fit, Get Inclusive 7.0 project. I will take part in fundraising the project crowdfunding campaign DivInc 1.0.

“IMC Training Centre Malaysia (IMC)” is a nonprofit organisation which is my volunteering project “Get Fit, Get Inclusive 7.0” beneficiary, provides lifestyle skills, sports and employment training for the special needs community.

Donations received in this campaign will be used :

• To support IMC daily operations and potentially constructing a new center to support more special needs children.
• To execute AIESEC’s Get Fit, Get Inclusive initiative (GFGI), a community project aligning with SDG Goal #10: Reduced Inequalities which aims to assist Special Children in Malaysia by conducting activities that supports the development of Special Children's mental and social skill.
