Hello! I’m Francine, a first-year Chemical Engineering student and a volunteer for AIESEC in Sunway’s Action for Equality 2.0 (AFE). AFE is a community project which aims to support women and girls- by aiding non-government women's organisations in creating awareness, encouraging youth advocacy and raising funds for their cause to end all discrimination towards all women and girls.
Growing up in a primarily female household, I’ve seen the impact of gender prejudice close to home. I’ve listened to stories from female family members about how this unconscious bias has interfered with their lives and hampered career advancement.
According to World Economic Forum’s 2022 Global Gender Gap Report, Malaysia’s gender gap disparity ranked 103rd out of 146 countries worldwide, one of the largest in South East Asia, trailing neighbouring countries Philippines (19th), Singapore (49th), and Thailand (79th). The report states that it will take Malaysia more than 132 years to close the gender gap.
As someone who is about to step into the working world in just a handful of years, these gender inequality figures are especially concerning to me. This discovery inspired me to join AFE, to become an agent of change for women's empowerment in the workplace by developing new skills and honing existing ones to redress the balance. I hope to actively involve myself in advocacy groups to educate the general public about the impact of gender stereotyping and how it affects productivity and confidence.
You, too, can make a difference by donating to this fundraiser or by spreading the word :) Every single contribution makes a huge difference. Thank you!
