Privilege the Underprivileged

The Story

Hi everyone!! We are are Annie, Atirah, Augustine, Celinda and Subramanian, students from Heriot-Watt University Malaysia (HWUM), and we are the representatives of the Light Your Future Eureka (LYFE) project Led by AIESEC HWUM with the goal of helping underprivileged children in Malaysia.

SDG4 (Sustainable Development Goal 4) is one of the United Nations goals that aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning. Throughout 2022, 5.8% of the Malaysian population have difficulties attending school. Moreover, it is reported that 75,400 students had either not shown up for their SPM after registering or did not qualify to go forward in their education. This shows how crucial it is for us to find ways to tackle this issue in order to meet the UN’s 2030 SDGs.

Our fundraising project, ‘Privilege the Underprivileged’ is created to help raise money for 2 NGOs which are Agathians Shelter which will help provide the daily necessities such as food, water and a place to live in and supply essential school materials to children that have been abandoned or at risk which helps us work towards our main goal as the LYFE Project which is SDG4. The second beneficiary is Buku Jalanan Chow Kit which is on top of working towards SDG4 by building teaching facilities paid by the donation and physical and emotional support will also be provided for families. 

Children are the future pillars of our country and every child has the fundamental right to quality education regardless of their background. There is a quote by Audrey Hepburn that says, “A quality education has the power to transform societies in a single generation, provide children with the protection they need from the hazards of poverty, labor exploitation and disease, and given them the knowledge, skills, and confidence to reach their full potential.” No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted as even the smallest gift can make a huge impact in the lives of the underprivileged children.
