Hello, I'm Mei Fung, a Malaysian Youth Volunteer under the Clean Our Plate project. I am passionate about how a vegan diet may reduce food waste, and I want everyone to understand its significance.
On a global scale, farm animals consume five times more food than the total human population because they consume more food than they produce. When crops are cycled via animals, the food supply is intentionally limited. Therefore, animal agriculture wastes more food than any other industry, and the material cost of wasted animal-based food is greater than that of wasted plant-based food.
Eliminating livestock breeding would result in a 75% reduction in total agricultural use while still providing enough food to feed the globe. Meat and dairy products contribute only 18% of calories and 37% of protein while consuming 83% of farmland and producing 60% of agriculture's greenhouse gas emissions.
As directly-consumed human food would be required, the resources necessary to maintain and feed cattle can be minimised, and the focus can be shifted swiftly to plant-based alternatives, particularly maize.
Those who can afford animal proteins should switch to plant-based diets instead of promoting animal-based diets as symbols of luxury and distinction. For these reasons, veganism must play a significant part in combating our wasteful culture.
Assist me in achieving my objectives to improve the food security and living conditions of poor communities in Sarawak. Tomorrow, let's ensure their food and establish a better life for them.
