The Story

Hello! We are Zainal, Min Xuen and Athirah. We are a group of volunteers in the Virtual Light Eureka (LYFE) project, hosted by AIESEC in Heriot-Watt University Malaysia. We aim to raise awareness to community about the challenges faced by the underprivileged children and raise funds to aid them in getting quality education. All funds riased will be donated to the Agathians Shelter and Buku Jalanan Chow Kit, where they will use the funds for education materials and daily necessities.

Our stories:

Zainal

During my foundation year, I was part of a volunteering club. One of the usual activities we had was visiting an orphanage once a week. It was a first for me, as I never had the chance to visit an orphanage in my life. At the orphanage, we were given various tasks such as cleaning up, helping with homework, and entertaining the children. When I was tutoring the children, I found out how much these students were falling behind their fellow classmates. A couple of them could not even write the alphabet. It also did not help that the students were also lacking in materials such as books, pencils, rulers, erasers, etc. It was a really heartbreaking for me. For the first time in my life, I saw the challenges faced by underprivileged children. As someone who was born with a silver spoon in my mouth, it really changed my perspective on how life was really like for many people out there. Hence, I decided that I would do all I can to help those who are in need, especially underprivileged children.

Min Xuen

I was first exposed to the challenges faced by B40 children during a home visit of a charity event. Growing up in a relatively privileged household, it really re-evaluated my views regarding the living conditions of many Malaysian households where even electricity and a clean water supply was a problem. This made me wonder, what can I do to help? In the midst of the pandemic, I had the opportunity to join a student-led organisation where I tutored a group of children in a sheltered home. They are bright children, who have the purest intentions and the utmost eagerness to learn. Every class, they would surprise me with their ever-enthusiastic questions. Yet, due to the lack of stable internet connection, resources, and materials, they are deprived of the exposure and chance to have a qualified education, which both you and I possess and yet many of us take for granted. It is heartbreaking to know that due to financial reasons and lack of opportunities, they might not have the ability to achieve their dreams and goals. With your help and donations, together we can make a great difference in their lives.

Athirah

My parents always taught me to help people in need whenever we can. So, I started volunteering to tutor a group of B40 children in a small institution during my free time. Whenever I meet them, they are always eager to learn something new. Despite the lack of resources and poor circumstances they experience at home, they never fail to come to class with a smile on their faces.

I once asked them ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’

One answered, ‘Teacher, I want to be an astronaut’

‘I want to be a police officer to catch the bad guys’, another answered.

‘Can I be a doctor? To help people who are sick,’ said another

It saddens me how their ambition requires a huge number of resources that they cannot access due to their financial situations, how enthusiastic they are to gain knowledge yet they cannot afford sufficient materials to aid their education. With your donation, we can help these underprivileged children have a better education to achieve their dreams.

Good on you all - Athirah, Min Xuen and Zainal - for actively helping the underprivileged... I believe it was the activist Jim Wallis who said "the best test of a nation's righteousness is how it treats the poorest and most vulnerable in its midst.” Keep up the good and selfless work.
