Hello! Im Ili from AIESEC in Johor Bharu. I joined this volunteer project because I feel this project is really close to me. I grew up with enough food on my plate and never have to worry what I am going to eat tomorrow. Thus, I notice my surroundings epecially my friends has this habit to waste their food. We have to admit, we teenagers, love to try new foods, go to new cafes, try their meals, take aesthetic picture of foods and post it in social medias. There is nothing wrong with that. But going to aesthetic cafes just to take pictures and not really eat their food is a bad behavior because you are wasting food.
Thus, there is few more days until the Holy month for Muslim, Ramadan fasting month. In this month we are practicing self-discipline, self-control, sacrifice, and empathy for those who are less fortunate. However, studies have shown that food waste increase between 15 and 20% during Ramadan as compared with an average month. It was reported that in 2018, as much as 20,088 tonnes of food went into the garbage bin nationwide daily during Ramadan. With that quantity wasted daily during the entire month of Ramadan there is enough to feed one and a half times the Malaysian population. (Malaysia Now, 2021).
Here in Clean Our Plate, we organised workshops for students about food waste by showing them the reality of food waste in Malaysia, the causes, impact and solutions that they can do to help our earth!
Not only them, this is our responsible, including you! Let's help us achieving the goal of zero waste. Be a part of club in reducing food waste by funding our campaign. Help us raise the awareness on this issue. Your little action makes a big difference!
