Hey there! We are students of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Our team consists of 10 beautiful ladies, joining this fundraising campaign to provide the underserved community with reusable sanitary pads, thus curbing the period poverty in our society.
What exactly is period poverty? Period poverty is a global problem that affects women who lack access to the safe, sanitary menstruation products they require and/or who are unable to manage their periods with dignity.
Period does not stop for the pandemic. According to a study by non-governmental organisation WASH United, the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (Waggs), and Unicef, about one in four women and girls between the ages of 13 and 35 have found it more difficult to organize their periods since the onset of the pandemic. Even before the pandemic, period poverty has been a thing. 50% of women and girls in developing countries cannot afford period care, and rely on old rags, sand and ash. As a result, they are 70% more likely to suffer from reproductive and urinary tract infections. In Malaysia, there are girls who skip school when they have their monthly period because their parents could not afford to buy sanitary pads.
Period poverty is a global issue and it should be discussed openly. So, let’s not turn a blind eye to this issue. Let’s start acting and help us by donating. For every RM 15 donated, one reusable sanitary pad is provided. A minimum of 2 reusable sanitary pads are needed for 1 woman/girl. To add, these reusable sanitary pads are made by talented refugee artisans! Join us on this impactful journey. Your contribution makes a difference!
