I am Amila, a student at the University of Malaya. I am a local virtual volunteer for the Clean Our Plate Project under AIESEC in UM which aims to tackle food insecurity in Malaysia.
What makes a hero? A hero is a person who exhibits heroic attributes such as having compassion for others. They are those who are willing to go the extra mile to make a positive change to others. Anyone can be a hero, even you. A simple act of kindness by donating as little as RM 1 can help put a smile on someone's face.
Did you know? In 2019, statistics by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations have shown that 900,000 Malaysians were facing food insecurity. The number skyrockets during the Covid-19 pandemic as people lost their source of income due to the implementation of lockdown in 2020. On the contrary, it was found that the amount of food wasted by Malaysians is enough to feed 12 million people a day. According to a study conducted by Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp), Malaysians threw away 16,688 tonnes of food daily. This shows a clear cut contrast between the amount of food being thrown away and those who are in need of it.
To achieve this goal, we are organizing a crowdfunding program in collaboration with Yayasan Food Bank Malaysia to help raise funds for the underprivileged community. 60% of the funds will go back to the underprivileged end beneficiary whereas 40% will be used for future projects development.
The tentative food donation list that will be received per beneficiaries are as follow:
1. Mini Rice Cake 30s (20g)
2. Margarine (1kg)
3. Orange Cordial (2kg)
4. Potato (2.5kg)
5. Onion (1.5kg)
6. Eggs Grade C 30s (60g)
As the saying goes, a journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step.
In that spirit, join us in taking the small first steps and together embark on this journey of making big positive change to the world! To planet Earth the place we call home.
