The Story

Greetings and hello!

I'm Aliah, one of the volunteers of AIESEC UM Clean Our Plate Winter Project 2022. I personally believe that each and everyone of us could make a change in this society even if we start with small acts because effort never betrays. Through this campaign, I wish to raise the public’s awareness on food waste and hunger issues.

Did you know that Malaysians waste almost 17 thousand tonnes of food daily in which, this amount is enough to fill up 16 Petronas Twin Towers to their brim!

And note that at least 24% of the food waste are actually still edible and could be sufficient to feed about 12 million people a day!

Not only that, the waste in landfills are mostly made up of organic food waste, which can lead to the production of a large amount of harmful greenhouse gas called methane gas which is eventually released into the air. This could lead to greenhouse effect and global warming.

In the midst of the current pandemic where economic instability affects almost everyone and food insecurity which has been existing is now through the roof, we volunteers, strive to raise the awareness of our local communities about food waste by advocating responsible and manageable food consumption. We need to realize that having food on the table is a huge privilege and should not be taken for granted or thrown to waste.

Clean Our Plate AIESEC in University of Malaya in the collaboration with Yayasan Food Bank Malaysia intend to raise the fund through this campaign, whereby 70% of the funds will go back to the underprivileged end beneficiary whereas 30% will be used for future projects development.

The tentative food donation list that will be received per beneficiaries are as follow:

1. Mini Rice Cake 30s (20g)

2. Margarine (1kg)

3. Orange Cordial (2kg)

4. Potato (2.5kg)

5. Onion (1.5kg)

6. Eggs Grade C 30s (60g)
