The Story

Hi, I am Maathuree from AISEC JB, currently studying in UTM JB. I'm enthusiastic about initiating culturally responsive practice in Penang Youth.

I joined AISEC JB knowing i can continue my journey of exploring and developing my leadership skills.

Our campaign, CLEAN OUR PLATE is alligned with the #12 SDGs Responsible Consumption and Production.The aim of this campaign is to build awareness among the youths and community on zero food waste. We strive to develop a sustainable impact in the community which leads to a greater future. My hometown is Penang. Penang is famous for its cuisine, and food lovers can really find culinary heaven here. However, this part of Malaysia seen dramatic rise in food waste year by year. The rise food waste is due to perishable foods, such as cooked foods, vegetables and fruits.

During the festival or night market, it is common to see half-eaten food everywhere.I feel sad as the consumers are not valuing the food. They eat half of the serving and threw awaythe rest of it.

Apart from that, did you know that Malaysians waste about 16,688 tonnes of food per day, an amount that can easily feed around 2.2 million people, 3 times a day. There are many souls out there who are not even getting one meal per day.

I believe that in order to solve this issue, the community have to change their mindset first. By driving self-momentum in understanding more the issues, the community can be part of the solution.

To uphold the real actions and having a clear mindset in community, fundraising is essential to keep the campaign sustainable so that it could keep providing spaces for youth to realize own ideas to solve food waste issue in the community.
