Hi! I’m Wai Kei from UTAR studying final year Bachelor of Accounting (Hons). This January I have joined the Speak Up 7.0 Project organized by AIESEC in UTAR as a local volunteer for 1 month. The project is to strive for quality education in Malaysia.
Do you know that 3,500,000 students in Malaysia do not meet the minimum English proficiency required from secondary school graduates? That’s resulting in those Malaysian students facing limited employability and restricted their learning capacity?
As this may be partly caused by the learning approach used in our education system which focuses on essay writing for examinations at the expense of speaking, it may be due to lack of coaching support and an unconducive environment to speak. B40 students are the most vulnerable group for this issue due to the lack of awareness, and ignorance among parents from poor families about coaching or supporting their children.
Here in Speak Up 7.0 Project, we organized workshops for secondary school students and the B40 community to provide coaching support and spread awareness. From Speak Up workshops, podcasts, competitions to encourage them to converse in English, we have STEM workshops to introduce them to STEM education too!
To ensure the sustainability of the project, fundraising is essential to enable us to spread awareness and help a wider community of B40 students. Our current target is to achieve RM 300 of donation. We could continue to run the workshops to achieve the quality education goal within the community with your small acts of giving.
Your little action contributes a large impact. Thank you!
