A Step Towards Equality

The Story

Bonjour! I am Dennis, an engineering undergraduate from Monash University and a volunteer for "Action for Equality" (AFE) by AIESEC in Sunway. In support of United Nations' SDG Goal 5: Gender Equality, AFE aims to raise awareness of gender equality in Malaysia and actively advocate for Women's Rights organisations.

It is indeed disheartening to know that no country in the world will be able to achieve gender equality by 2030 based on current progress. Too little has been done to support this work, but there are glimmers of hope, and I am willing to hold onto that hope by advocating for gender equality and non-discrimination.

As part of Action for Equality, we are raising funds for AWAM (ALL Women's Action Society). AWAM is a non-profit organisation that champions the movement towards a gender-equal world, actively promotes the social transformation of the female population, and at the same time supports women in crisis. Work carried out by AWAM include lobbying for the recently tabled Anti-Sexual Harassment Bill 2021, conducting outreach programmes to inform and educate, and providing free counselling and legal assistance to all survivors regardless of gender. The consequences of the COVID pandemic could set back the limited progress that has been made on gender equality, threatening many women especially vulnerable women from the lower-income bracket.
