Gender Equality is a human fight

The Story

Greetings to you all beautiful people, I'm Shermen, a sincere volunteer from a project called 'Action for Equality from AIESEC in Sunway. I believe most of you are here because of my continuous posts from Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook and also you have a very very kind heart <3.

So, into the main topic, I had become a fundraiser for this campaign. Our purpose is to raise awareness of challenges related to gender equality in Malaysia. Women in our country and worldwide had faced different forms of discrimination regardless of school, workplace or public. Throughout this campaign, we believe this can be stopped and changed by educating our lovely young women, even young boys about their rights and hopefully reduce the current stigmas and taboos through webinars and workshops where we invite speakers from multiple NGOs such as AWAM (ALL Women's Action Society) and others to provide us information regarding current issue.

I believe 8 out of 10 women had experienced at least one form of sexual harassment in their lives. For the record, I have. A middle-aged man once made a sex joke in front of my face, and if I did not recall wrongly, he said and I quote 'girls like boys with larger d*cks'. I was stunned at the moment and did not know what to respond to, I don't even know it was a type of verbal sexual harassment until I told my father and he said it was. Some of my friends console me by saying I was pretty enough to attract people like him. I was angry and sad because there are no laws in Malaysia able to help people like me. I was just a person working part-time in a mall. No contracts, no black-and-white paper were provided so I was not covered in the Employment Act, and I definitely was not covered in the Penal Code as well as I am not being physically molested or assaulted. After I speak out to my friends, I realised not just me who experienced these situations, some of them were being cat-called by unknown strangers on the street. But still, there was nothing to do about it. Henceforth, I do hope with this campaign and fundraising, we all can help make some little change to society, and to the girls who were treated unjustly. And finally, I thank you for reading until here. <3
