Assalamualaikum and hi everyone!
I'm Amira Elina, an undergraduate student from the University of Malaya. I'm currently a virtual volunteer in Clean Our Plate (COP) project under Aiesec in UM. This project aims to tackle the food waste issue that is happening in Malaysia.
Did you know?
Malaysians waste about 16,667 tonnes of food daily. By 2021, this food waste will be enough to fill up 16 Petronas Twin Towers to the brim! Can you imagine that? The sad part is that about 24% of the food waste is still edible. It is enough to feed about 12 million people a day!
Not only that, since 49% of the waste in landfills is made up of organic food waste, a large amount of harmful greenhouse gas called methane is released into the air. This could also lead to global warming.
Thus, Clean Our Plate AIESEC in the University of Malaya is collaborating with Yayasan Food Bank Malaysia to raise funds to help those in need, especially during these difficult times. The fund will be used to purchase food donation items for the underprivileged end beneficiary, to impact around 150 communities that assist them during this difficult pandemic period.
"Giving is not just about making a donation, it's about making a difference."- Kathy Calvin
Through this crowdfunding campaign, we hope that we can raise awareness of the importance of food waste issues in Malaysia and encourage people to take action today!
70% of the funds will go back to the underprivileged end beneficiary whereas 30% will be used for future projects development.
The tentative food donation list that will be received per beneficiaries are as follow:
1. Mini Rice Cake 30s (20g)
2. Margarine (1kg)
3. Orange Cordial (2kg)
4. Potato (2.5kg)
5. Onion (1.5kg)
6. Eggs Grade C 30s (60g)
