How much food do we need to feed 12 million people?
Well, with the amount of food Malaysians throw away each day, we certainly can.
Who are you?
My name is Jia En and I’m currently in my freshman year at University of Malaya, also a passionate volunteer for Clean Our Plate AIESEC.
Growing up in Malaysia, a.k.a. Food Paradise, we are no stranger to amazing food: Nasi Lemak, Briyani, Char Kuey Teow… and the question “what do you want for lunch?” is one of the hardest questions for us Malaysians to answer, simply because we are spoiled for choices!
However, so much food ultimately leads to a serious food waste problem in Malaysia. According to the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp), the amount of food wastage in Malaysia is enough to feed 12 million people three times a day. To make things worse, the amount rises by about 15 to 20 per cent during the festive season.
Unfortunately, most Malaysians are not aware of these jaw-dropping facts since they tend to overlook the seriousness of the issue of food waste in our country.
Sounds very serious… but what can we do?
This crowdfunding campaign is an initiative by Clean Our Plate AIESEC in University of Malaya in collaboration with Yayasan Food Bank Malaysia to raise funds. The money will then be used to purchase around 460kg of food donation items for the underprivileged beneficiary.
By donating, we can help the underprivileged groups.
By donating, we can spread the words about food waste.
By donating, we can make Malaysia a better place.
By donating, You Can,
The future Malaysia thanks you.
