Hello there! My name Is Geetha and I'm 16 years old in SMK PUCHONG. I've joined in a school program called AIESEC: CLEAN OUR PLATE. This is a project to change the perspective of public towards surplus food as a food for human consumption. In fact, AIESEC is a non-governmental not-for-profit organisation in consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), affiliated with the UN DPI, member of ICMYO, and is recognized by UNESCO.
Lets focus on the topic of this fundraising! After the government announced the enforcement of the Movement Control Order (MCO) on March 18, for the first phase up to March 30, to curb the spread of COVID-19, there was panic buying of groceries and other necessities as consumers wanted to stock up on foodstuff. The purchases were mainly highly perishable items such as vegetables, fruits, tofu, raw meat, eggs amongst other dry food and frozen foods. Without doubt, i can say that panic buying equals to selfishness, not a preparation for later. This stocking up phenomena would've led up to food waste although there are aggressive campaigns that couldn't achieve their goals.
Meanwhile, in the food and beverage industry, 80 per cent of the waste is contributed by the unused parts of fruits and vegetables in food preparation, whereas the remaining 20 per cent is contributed by left-over food generated by consumers. Similar waste is generated by domestic households during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2016, the Food Aid Foundation reported that Malaysians wasted almost 15,000 tonnes of food, including 3,000 tonnes of edible food, every day.
There are many in need at this moment, for themselves and their family. Some news articles broke my heart where some dared to steal food to feed their kids—while a family somewhere else enjoyed dinner together. For my fundraising campaign, I'm focusing on elders who has been neglected due to the MCO. Their shortage of food and anything else wouldn't be known as they don't receive as much support and donations as before. When this reaches the end, the total amount of money will be donated to Rumah Victory Elderly Home to purchase some daily supplies along with the food items for each 70 individuals.
Your easy contribution in donating any amount will help me to reach my goal, which is to collect RM700 for the elderly home. It's important to spread love to everyone like these people who needs someone by their side during this days. This is a thankful sign from me towards everyone who donated and the homes that took care of elders and provide them a comfortable space. As a student, I'm happy for the fundraising which i hope would be a success. This campaign starts from now till 06/02/2021.
Here's a saying from me, 'Donate them and they'll donate you too'. When we have a heart that cares for other, that is willing to help them without expecting in return, the purity that the people sees in us would be grateful for our existence. Their sorrows that hoped for solution will not be there anymore. No matter what, their blessings and prayers for us, for this help you've made, that is what we need other than daily supplies.
