Waste Not, Want Not - Food Donation Crowdfunding

The Story

Hi, everyone! My name is Athirah Azlan, a Year 1 Economics student at the University of Nottingham Malaysia. I am currently volunteering for a food waste issue campaign called ‘Clean Our Plate’ under AIESEC Sunway.

AIESEC is the world’s largest non-profit youth-run organisation. It is an international not-for-profit organisation that provides young people with leadership development. The organisation focuses in empowering young leaders to make a positive impact on society through actions. Clean Our Plate is a project that focuses on developing awareness and providing solutions in reducing food wastage among the youth and the community. The project also aims to impact the Sustainable Development Goal #12.3: Responsible Consumption of Habits: By 2030, halve per capita global waste at the retail and consumer levels and reduce food losses along production and supply chains, including post-harvest losses.

This figure continues to grow during the MCO period as everyone stocked up their daily needs, particularly food, thinking these products will be running out during this period. In fact, the panic buying situation led to critical food waste issues in Malaysia, as many of the surplus foods that were not consumed before the expired date ended up in landfills. Moreover, this pandemic also brought a negative impact to the underprivileged communities as they had received lesser donations and supports from communities. 

Thus, I am here raising funds to support the two beneficiaries: SHELTER Home For Children and Rumah Victory Elderly Home. 

The total amount of the crowdfunding（RM 800）will be divided in half and donated to each of the beneficiaries. The funds will be used to purchase their needs and sent to them (SOP will be followed). This fundraising campaign will be ongoing until 6^th Feb 2021.
