The Story

“If people don’t have enough money to buy food, it means they don’t have the means to buy a pad either. But this connection is never made.”

If you are reading this, congratulation! You are one step closer to making a difference!

Liang Jun, Catherine and Harsani here, we are supporting the Menstrual Equity campaign under SERUM Initiative and we cannot do this without everyone of you all!

THE PROBLEM

Period poverty in Malaysia has caused a wide health gap for its lower-income families. The inaccessibility of menstruation products to those who menstruate is known as period poverty, and it often results in missed school days and job opportunities to the affected. Over 500 million women and girls face period poverty across the globe each month. However, there are no statistics on how many people experience period poverty in Malaysia at the moment.

COVID-19 IMPACT/MOVEMENT CONTROL RESTRICTION

Malaysia’s Movement Control Order to help contain the COVID-19 outbreak has increased the difficulty of women and girls attaining the products that they need. Restrictions consist of limited travel and only leaving for essential items, of which sanitary pads are not included.

The All Women’s Action Society (AWAM) of Malaysia set out to provide much sanitary product to women who were unable to obtain them due to restricted movement. AWAM emerged as a women’s rights organization, educating and providing resources for women’s health, domestic violence and sexual harassment.

THE SOLUTION

SERUM aims to provide reusable sanitary pads for 500 beneficiaries from underserved communities across Malaysia. For every RM 15 donated, one reusable sanitary pad is provided. We aim to provide a minimum of 2 reusable sanitary pads to each beneficiary. These reusable sanitary pads are made by our talented refugee artisans. Hence, each donation creates 2 layers of impact: health and economic impacts.

SERUM also collaborates closely with NGOs, universities, local youth groups, and social enterprises on-the-ground to ensure each of the supplies is channeled to the communities that are truly in need.c

THE IMPACT

500 underserved beneficiaries will receive 2 pieces of reusable sanitary pads each. This will help in reducing period poverty issues in Malaysia. We hope that women in Malaysia will be able to have menstrual equity, and no one should be left out of this equation.

In addition, our refugee artisan who makes the reusable sanitary pads will be empowered economically.

Donate now to create both health and economic impact to the underserved communities across Malaysia!
