Speak Up! For A Better Education

The Story

Hello there! I 'm Atikah. One of the Speak Up! in Penang project committees since 2020.  I m doing fundraising for this project and lets me share with you about Speak Up and how it impacts me a lot through my experience organizing this project :)

Speak Up in Penang is an education project organized by AIESEC in Penang that focuses on SDG 4 (Quality Education) where we aim to empower Malaysian students by developing their English- speaking ability and enhancing their knowledge and skills in STEM through a cross-cultural learning environment. We are impacting our society by providing several workshops to local secondary school students and recruiting passionate volunteers to help us to make this project successful. Before the pandemic hit, we run this project physically during semester break where we involve international volunteers in this project but after the pandemic hit Malaysia, we run this project virtually.

To be honest, I also feel doubtful and uncertain when we had our first virtual Speak Up project because I m not sure how we can impact society just by doing an online project. However, it is eye-opening for me because after we finishing our first virtual project, I could see how much we already impact the students, volunteers and committee involve. I still remember the moment that I was watching students' testimonial videos,  I could see their eyes are shining and they really gain a lot of learning from our workshops despite the online setting.  It gives me a mixed feeling and makes me feel that we still can contribute to society even it is online. I m still in Speak Up project because it impacting me a lot and make me realize the real challenge that we face in education right now.  I believe that every child in Malaysia deserves to have quality education and none of them should leave behind.  If we don't take action to help them, then, who will do that? Especially during this MCO period.
