Kitchen Renovations for SOLS.ai

The Story

My name is Miri Adek and i am one of the teachers at the SOLS Academy of Innovation (SOLS.ai) and i am teaching IT Skills. I started myself in SOLS.ai as a student, I had no English with no confidence or any skills. I was just a normal orang asli youth who never thought about the importance of education or understand what life really is also i just liked spending my time with unnecessary activities. My journey began when I joined SOLS.ai in 2014 when I was invited by my friend who was also a student that studied earlier before me.  I was impressed by him after 3 months of studying, he had changed himself so much from the very shy and soft guy to become a confident and brave guy. So, I decided to also go and study.

At first, I never thought that I would become a teacher or someone successful but throughout my journey I learnt and improved so much in terms of skills , self-confidence as well as life understanding (MOTIVATION). It has changed myself a lot and also opened my mind about human potential- that everyone can always progress in life. This is my sixth year of being here, I have been given so many opportunities to build myself from one stage to another. I am very happy and excited about the opportunities given as i am gaining new experiences as well as i am improving my self.  

I believe there are many underprivileged youth that cannot pursue their studies further due to financial problems or failing in the exams, they have no direction of where to go or what to do, living far away from the city or nobody helps them and there is no opportunity for them to study, especially those who are poor and from rural areas like Orang Asli, Sabahan and Sarawakian also some other Malaysian youth like Malay, Indian also Chinese. 

SOLS.ai is the right place for them to open up their life steps from the issues that they faced so that they can get the opportunity to study and improve themselves. As I have improved myself, i want them to also get this opportunity and change their lives. 

To help them better, we need a good and comfortable place for them to stay, especially the kitchen. As part of the school activities, Cooking is a daily routine activity because most of the time we are using the kitchen to cook and prepare for our meals  and all of the students learn how to cook. This is a good skill that everyone should learn. 

The building is very old and always have problems with leaking, broken tiles or walls, also it is not so comfortable because there are so many mice or insects. Due to these problems, it messes up the kitchen and it is very dirty caused by the leaking and make our food quality is not so good. The space is also not really suitable for keeping the kitchen stuff or the food like vegetables and other things.
