Project New Beginnings is a collaborative exercise by 4 privately held Kuching organisationsto raise funds for the rebuilding of longhouses razed by fire. Fire rages far reaching devastation for longhouse residents. No villager is ever prepared for the complete eradication of their entire home and property within mere minutes. The financial implication of such an event is very significant.
The fact that these communities are situated in such remote locations and that financial resources are scarce, means that the rebuilding of new homes take a long time, up to decades.
We are combining our efforts to start this Project to generate awareness towards the plight of victims of longhouse fires and collect donations to help complete the homes which these people have so long lived without. The series of shanty homes have already developed various degrees of permanence, whilst villagers scrape funds and government allocations to purchase the next building material.
5 Sarawak-based highland villages have been identified to receive funds to be collected from Project New Beginnings,
1 - Long Palai in TelangUsan, longhouse completely destroyed by fire in 2019
2 - Long Peluan in UluBaram, longhouse completely destroyed by fire in 2018
3 - Long Seridan in UluTutoh, longhouse completely destroyed by fire in 2016
4 - Long Tuyut in UluLapok, longhouse completely destroyed by fire in 2012
5 - Bued Main Beruh in Bario, longhouse completely destroyed by fire in 2004
