CHARIS HOSPICE

Charis Hospice was registered under the Registrar of Company in January,2005. It was granted tax exempt status in March, 2007 (No. Warta Kerajaan: 5456). This status continues till 31st Dec 2025 when it will be reviewed again by the authorities.

It is a charitable organization offering free palliative home care services to patients with advanced cancer and other life-limiting illnesses irrespective of race and religion. We work hand-in-hand with hospital doctors.

Palliative care is the care of patients with life-limiting illnesses. It emphasizes quality of life and helps patients live as comfortably as possible. It aims to provide relief from pain and other troubling symptoms by providing wholesome physical and psychosocial support to them and their families. We started out with 1 doctor/medical director and 1 nurse and now we have 8 full time and part-time staff consisting of 2 doctors, 4 nurses and 4 administrative/development staff, and about 10 volunteers.

In November 2014, we moved into our own premises in Paya Terubong for further expansion. Previously we operated from rental-free premises of our supporters, in Paya Terubong and then in Minden Heights, for a total of ten years.

We are entirely funded through active fund raising efforts and donations from the public and a small grant from the government. Our 2023 operating budget is about RM999K and the cost of caring for a patient is RM17/day.
