THE PROBLEM

Do you know how much FOOD WASTE is produced by Malaysians in our daily life?

It's 16688 tonnes per day!!

This amount of food wasted can easily feed 2.2 million people, 3 meals per day!

While people are deeply concerned about the plastic waste issues where plastics slowly filling up the earth, however it only constitutes 14% of the trash in landfills, whilst there is 49% of the waste actually from organic food waste

We want to inspire public to reduce at least 50% of food waste by the end of 2030 through cultivating responsible consumption habits, we started our journey with Clean Our Plate as a national project of AIESEC since 2016 in creating awareness, provide easy and obvious initiatives to youth in Malaysia through school workshops, café engagement, University collaboration, and public awareness.

THE SOLUTION

Clean Our Plate is a 4-week voluntary project that allows the organizing committees and student volunteers to be more aware of food waste issues around Malaysia. The framework of the project is to learn, do, lead, and influence.

1st - Train the Trainer (TtT)
This aims to equip our volunteers with enough knowledge and skills in tackling food waste issues with the trainings and webinar provided by our national partner MAEKO Malaysia, and UTM lecturer Dr. Huszalina as well as UTM Dusun and UTM lecturer Dr. Norazah.

2nd - Food Donation Drive
In collaboration with 448 Food Bank, organizing committees and volunteers collect surplus food from their neighborhood and donate to low-income families.

3rd - School Workshops Session Delivery
Conducted by project volunteers towards local students on understanding food waste issues, action space on collecting food waste, and turning into compost or liquid fertilizer. To equip project volunteers with facilitation skills, critical thinking, or design thinking to facilitate their thought processes in planning their own initiatives by delivering sessions related to project management.

4th - Home Composting Challenge
A one-month challenge for organizing committees and project volunteers to collect food waste from their daily meals to do composting on their own. This initiative aims to increase awareness and cultivate action to tackle food waste issues among volunteers through hands-on activities.

THE IMPACT

Clean Our Plate has been reached more than 600 Global Volunteers, 103 Secondary Schools, 21,840 Secondary Students, and 58,000 digital reaches in our social media. Our food waste measurement is measured by 4 Matrics. Our food waste measurement is measured by 4 Matrics.

1) Increased Awareness of Students
The survey questionnaire was distributed to the students and their correct answers were measured to calculate the change in awareness: 12.53% average increase of awareness across 23 schools.

2) Behavioral Change of Students
Behavior change is measured using the Likert scale where the students choose from 1 (Strongly Disagree) to 5 (Strongly Agree) to statements related to tackling food waste issues. Their choices are then further categorized to Negative, Neutral and Positive behavior: 33.43% Average Increase of Positive Behavior Across 23 Schools

3) Food Waste Reduction in School
Food waste measurement is done in two particular periods, where the measurement was taken for at least two days to get the average for each period. Being able to reduce food waste in the school is a great start to get these students practicing it in their daily lifestyle: 32.7% Average Reduction of Food Wastage Across 6 Schools.

4) Activities Carried Out by Students
Students raised awareness to their peers by carrying out the quizzes and competition on their social media to speed the awareness to more people and make the food waste issue more interesting.
