THE PROBLEM

After teaching the children in PPR Community and living with them in Kampung Malaysia for a few months, the teacher has identified a few aspects which need to be given attention among the children and youths in the  area namely:

  1. Lack of healthy interaction between children and youths in terms of communication. Bully is also a common issue in the PPR which results in moral issues.
  2. There is no safe space for the children in the community to play since the playground was destroyed by vandals. Hence, they rarely come out to play and even if they do, it is in the open parking space which is harmful for them.

Hence, the teacher seeks to organize a board game activity which will assist in building positive relationships between the two groups as well as encouraging them to be competitive in a healthy way.

THE SOLUTION

The teacher believes that social skills education through fun approach will be beneficial to the targeted group in a long-run. This is because board game will not only encourage the students to be competitive in a critical yet positive way, but also improve on the quality communication between youths and children.

Through playing board games, they will also learn negotiation skills, strategizing skills and teamwork which are the key skills that they will need to have once they go into the community outside their residential area. They will also learn about the importance of helping each other. Besides that, this event is indoor which makes it safe for the groups to play together.

THE IMPACT

Towards the end of the campaign, the teacher wishes to see positive changes among the youths and children of PPR Kampung Malaysia in terms of:

  • Encourage them to think before they speak/take action.

Community level

  • Building positive long-term relationship between the youths and children so that they will be able to understand and support each other.
  • Encouraging peaceful negotiation in resolving issues faced by the community
  • Encouraging the groups to be competitive in a healthy way
