THE PROBLEM
During the Covid-19 outbreak, while the rest of us were protected at home, some of us were not. It is essential for our dialysis patients to come for dialysis treatment 3 times a week to survive. Our doctors and nurses are working hard to save lives by providing subsidised dialysis treatment for our dialysis patients during these tough times.
Currently, more than 1,700 patients are receiving dialysis in our 28 dialysis centres located throughout the country (https://nkf.org.my/about-us/centers-list-roadmap/). Our dialysis operation is running as usual from Monday to Saturday from 7:00am to 9:00pm.
THE SOLUTION
As a non-profit charitable organisation, our principal objective is to control and treat kidney disease amongst in particular the poor and deserving Malaysians, including those living in areas far accessible to dialysis treatment.
Dialysis treatment is intended to keep the patient’s health as normal as possible while the patients wait for a kidney transplant. Without functional kidneys or dialysis, toxic waste products and excess fluid would accumulate in the patient’s bodies. This is harmful and can be fatal.
THE IMPACT
Each patient has to endure 4 hours of dialysis treatment, 3 times a week. Due to the many long hours spent on dialysis, 87% of our patients are unemployed. Thus, it is a constant challenge for us to come up with sufficient funds to subsidise the cost of the dialysis for our poor patients. NKF subsidises one-third of the fees of all our patients.
With no or insufficient income, the patients are faced with difficulties in paying for their dialysis. It thus falls on us to seek funds to underwrite the cost of dialysis which together with other ancillaries add up to more than RM30 million a year.
