Mental health disorders are an increasingly prevalent issue worldwide with an estimated 970 million people suffering from mental or substance use disorder globally. In Malaysia, the national prevalence of mental health disorders is at an all time high with 2.3% of adults suffering from depression and as many as half a million children struggling with mental health problems ranging from anxiety to depression.
The current Covid-19 pandemic has worsened the situation due to enforced lengthy periods of isolation, strict limitations on social interactions and stress induced by traumatic life events such as loss of jobs and financial stability. While Malaysia has taken great strides in mental health advocacy, there is still a lot of room for improvement.
We, the students of GLT1015, plan to address this issue through our project. Through our Mind Your Mind project, we will be raising awareness and educating the public about mental health issues in Malaysia. Our aim is to disseminate accurate information via a public Instagram account to highlight important mental health issues and what people can do to help those struggling with this invisible disease. We also aim to encourage people to donate to the Malaysian Mental Health Association (MMHA) to help fund the mental health services provided by this organisation. This project will be implemented virtually through surveys, an online quiz and an Instagram page.
Misconceptions on mental health issues and conditions among the public can be clarified. We hope that by conducting this campaign, suicidal rates as a result of mental illness can be reduced through individual education and outreach events. Not only those who are suffering from mental illness, we want to give support to all the people currently having mental problems. We would like to let them know that they are not alone , and there are still someone behind them to give them support. Lastly, the public can have more insights into the services provided by Malaysian Mental Health Association (MMHA) which are always the best way to solve their problems.

Mind Your Mind is a project conducted by a group of undergraduates from Universiti Malaya in the purpose of fulfilling one of the course requirements. The project is carried out mainly:
To clarify misconceptions on mental health issues and conditions
To prevent suicide through individual education and outreach events
To help promote MMHA through community outreach events
The funds collected will be transferred to Malaysia Mental Health Association (MMHA). The Malaysian Mental Health Association (MMHA) provides psychiatric rehabilitation service at our centre; conducts seminars and awareness programmes for the public and targeted population groups, as well as programmes for support groups for clients and their families. For these, they depend on financial support from well wishers to ensure that their programmes can reach out to, and benefit, as many people as possible. All the funds will be used to maintain the rehabilitation, advocacy and public education activities of MMHA. As such, we appeal to you to support us by donating to MMHA to help make a difference.
Small gestures, big difference! Show your love and care to all the individuals who are suffering from mental illness now!
Thank you.
