THE PROBLEM

As the number of Corona Virus increases, many families were forced to remain indoors. Those who relied on their day to day income were badly affected and were unable to afford basic necessities. There are a total of 180 families on Mantanani Island, Sabah who are struggling to sustain themselves, as they depend heavily on tourism for income.

They would generate income from small scale fishing, working in resorts, water sports or making handicrafts, but due to the Movement Control Order (MCO), now they have no visitors at all, and have been jobless since February. More families have reached out to us as the lockdown extended. Many, who once have small amount of savings also came forward to seek for help.

THE SOLUTION

I have partnered together with Reef Check Malaysia who will assist the islanders in getting supplies that they need.

We have estimated that it would cost RM100 per household for essential food supplies for 2 weeks, this includes:

  • Rice
  • Eggs
  • Noodles
  • Sugar
  • Vegetables
  • Cooking Oil
  • Coffee/ Tea

We have been raising funds and distributing food to the islanders since April, and now we are targeting to raise another RM18,000 to help all 180 families for the month of July. To help them get back on their feet.

THE IMPACT

With our help, the villagers on Mantanani Island have been able to sustain their lives without needing to worry about their basic necessities for each month. Hopefully, this will relieve their daily burden and bring joy to their faces.

Let's help each other out in times of need, no matter how big or small the amount is, it would make a difference in the lives of the islanders.

In early May, a total of 80 houses benefited from the first phase of food distribution. The assistance distributed is in the form of basic necessities ordered from KB Superstore. The second round of aid arrived at Mantanani Island on 2 June, at 10 am and was distributed at 2 pm. This time, 180 households were involved in receiving this assistance presented by Tuan Junaidie Bolah, MPKK Pulau Mantanani. The food aid contains essential items such as rice, eggs, wheat flour, yellow noodles, sugar, soy sauce, cooking oil, and vegetables.

Project Summary

Around the world, the Covid-19 pandemic virus has hit many countries, affecting all sectors as well as the local economy. In Malaysia, the government has implemented MCO (Movement Control Order) since 18 March until 9 June 2020. This control order has limited the movement of all communities and for the residents of Mantanani Island, this is one of the biggest challenges to be faced.

Mantanani Island has two villages, mostly B40 community of coastal fishermen and partly dependent on the tourism sector. Since the island developed as a tourist destination, many islanders have earned employment as well as a steady income. It has also reduced the community's dependence on fishing activities.

However, as a result of Covid-19 and MCO, the community's source of income is severely affected as the tourism sector has stopped operating. Many islanders are laid off or given unpaid leave by their employers. The people of the island are also limited in carrying out fishing activities due to the MCO, thus making their lives more challenging, like the Malay proverb ‘kais pagi makan pagi, kais petang makan petang’.

This Covid-19 Emergency Food Assistance fundraiser by Erjun is supporting Reef Check Malaysia's initiatives to help the community on Mantanani Island affected by Covid-19. The closure of tourism activities on Mantanani Island has caused many residents to lose their source of income and employment. Therefore, this effort has been made to help ease the burden of the community especially those who depend on tourism and fisheries resources.

Hi everyone. Stay safe and strong!

About the Organization/Project behind this Campaign

Ooi Erjun

Hi, I’m Erjun, a female who’s passionate about protecting the environment and the people around it. I’ve created Us For Ocean, to educate and spread awareness about the importance of Marine Life, and how we should take care of it before it all disappears. As I’ve always believed that at the end of the day, it’s not about what we have or what we’ve accomplished. It’s about who we’ve lifted up and who we’ve made better. It’s what we’ve given back. I’m here to raise funds for causes that I truly care about. Let’s try to make the lives of other better.
