THE PROBLEM

The frequency of heavy precipitation events has already increased for the nation as a whole and is projected to increase in all Malaysia regions coming this northeast monsoon transition (November - March 2024). Increase in both extreme precipitation and total precipitation have contributed to increase in severe flooding events in certain regions of Malaysia notably in Sandakan, Sabah. Heavy rainfall can lead to numerous hazards, for example flood, including risk to human life, damage to buildings and infrastructure and loss of crops and livestock. Landslide, which can threaten human life, distrup transportation and communications.

In 25 December 2022, a total of 105 houses were reported to have either collapsed or sustained heavy damages after waves strucked them during a high tide phenomenon at two villages in Sandakan last year. In the incident around 10:30pm, over 200 victims were reported to be affected in Kampung Forest and Kampung Tinusa Dua. A spokesman for the Sabah Fire and Rescue Department Operations Centre in a Statement last year said and estimated 100 houses in Kampung Forest were affected. He added another 500 homes in the village also faced threat from the natural phenomenon.
