Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a pathogen that targets and weakens the immune system. It can cause an autoimmune condition called AIDS - Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. This increases patients’ risk of acquiring new conditions such as pneumonia, fungal infections and cancer. Currently, there is no cure for HIV. HIV management includes medications such as antivirals, prevention of opportunistic infections, regular check-ups and providing psychological support.
Unfortunately, HIV is associated with stigma due to the underlying belief that only certain groups can acquire the infection. Although higher infection rates have been recorded in people that have unprotected sexual intercourse, people belonging to lower socioeconomic classes, intravenous drug abusers, LGBTQIA+, and people of color, this is predominantly due to the lack education on safe sex practices amongst risk groups.
In Malaysia, people with HIV refuse to get tested and treated due to fear of abandonment by their families and community, and therefore, do not receive adequate treatment and support.
To tackle issues as such, local charities such as INTAN Life Zone support and treat people living with HIV in Malaysia. INTAN’s DIGNITY Programme houses 20 individuals living with HIV. The residents of this home are either referred by hospitals or walk-ins and INTAN collaborates with hospitals or clinics to facilitate their treatment. INTAN also conducts screening for at-risk populations and refers them for treatment if tested HIV positive. In addition to that, INTAN provides information on anti-retroviral medications and advocates the importance of timely treatment amongst its residents. Furthermore, they provide residents with moral and spiritual support and help them reintegrate back into their families.
The funds raised from this campaign will help INTAN provide their residents with food, detergent, and other daily supplies. This will support their living conditions and significantly improve their quality of life.

VOLTAGE - Volunteer To Aspire Generations is a student club from Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia that aims to help the community surrounding us with a unified goal to seek the best in humanity and help those who need it the most. We are a well-known community service club based in NUMed, involved actively in a wide range of volunteer projects. This year we plan on hosting multiple in-person events to make up for what we lost during the COVID-19 pandemic. In previous years, we have had weekly volunteering activities across Johor, including Project GUIDE, Project HOPE, Soup Kitchen and Project Cerebral Palsy as well as our main volunteer event, PROJECT SEED. As a result of our vast number of projects, we have won Society Contribution and Outstanding Contribution to the Community Awards from Newcastle UK 2020 and Society of the Year 2018/19 Award from NUMed.
