THE PROBLEM

DNS is a non-governmental and not-for-profit organization empowering people with learning disabilities that include autism, down syndrome, slow learning and any other form of delayed developmental disorder. We provide comprehensive and holistic support to enable these young adults/adults to lead independent lives with economic empowerment.

One of our programs is Bake With Dignity, a bakery that creates job opportunities for People with Learning Disabilities to learn and to earn, particularly for those who need higher support in a sheltered environment. BWD focuses on developing baking skills, fine and gross motor skills and the ability to undertake regular tasks. Our beneficiaries are encouraged to interact with customers by taking orders, handling cash and delivering goods within the building compound, thus they also develop social skills.

We provide paid employment and training for those with learning disabilities and promote public awareness on learning disability.

How it all started

The project started casually 6 years ago, baking 2 days a week sharing the very kitchen in the house used for Supported Living programme. At the time, we baked cookies and cupcakes in a small 6-litre oven (like a small 18-inch TV).

Then, a big-hearted parent, Mr Dennis Lee, caught on our vision and took a leap of faith, ordered some cookies worth RM 2,000. To us it was a huge sum. A breakthrough.  Through Dennis, BWD was introduced to Mdm Teh Lip Kim, the managing director of the major property company, Selangor Dredging Bhd (SDB) who also caught on our vision to support the community of the learning disabled in a big way.  She started by making 2 bulk orders a year, which generate RM50k for BWD.

We are a success! Our young employees love to bake delicious treats and every day they learn more and more.

But we need your help to keep our business booming. Most of the current electrical appliances that we use in the kitchen are meant for small-scale household usage.  But due to frequent use and mishandling of these appliances, the life span is very short.  Therefore, we need hardy and sturdy industrial appliances to cope with the production. Increase food storage capacity, extend shelf life of our baked products and to cater to customers with fresh warm food.

THE SOLUTION

With your help, we will be able to give this opportunity to more people with disabilities and bake more delicious cakes to support our activities.

We need to buy:

  1. Food Warmer - RM1,500
  2. Electrical Mixer (Kitchen Aid) - RM3,500
  3. Hand Mixer (x3) - RM900.00
  4.  Industrial Food Processor - RM1,000
  5. Weighing Scale (x2) - RM600.00
  6. Stove Oven - RM6,000
  7. Stainless Steel workstation - 2.5ftx6ft with 1 shelf - RM900

THE IMPACT

The expansion has created more job positions, which doubled up the number of bakers with learning disabilities and we now bake 5 days a week from Monday to Friday and can serve walk-in customers.

Give now to help us empower more learning disabled people in our community. Your support means a lot to us!

About the Organization/Project behind this Campaign

Dignity and Services

DNS is a non-governmental and not-for-profit organization empowering people with learning disabilities that include autism, down syndrome, slow learner and any other form of delayed developmental disorder. DNS provides comprehensive and holistic support to enable these young adults/adults with learning disabilities to lead independent lives with economic empowerment.

Currently, DNS is involved directly in 2 Supported Living programs and 2 Social Enterprises – Bake With Dignity and One Two Juice, reaching 30 members and their families in 2 communities in Klang Valley.

With the Supported Living program, people with learning disabilities can enjoy a weekend overnight stay; learn basic life skills and social skills such as household chores, grocery shopping, taking public transport, making friends, having pets, care of personal hygiene & personal safety, express their feelings and making own choices.

In the Social Enterprises, Bake with Dignity and One Two Juice, we promote social inclusion for our beneficiaries, who are able to learn professional skills and earn a salary.

Our goal is to equip people with learning disabilities with the skills they need to be independent and feel part of the community.
