As we all knew the current situation in Malaysia is worsening from day by day due to COVID-19 and continues lockdown. There are many welfare homes and needy communities in the difficulties of getting basic food especially breads as there is a lack of supplies and huge demand for bread in the market. Therefore, PSPK proposed the “Bread for Breakfast” project as breakfast is indeed the most important meal of the day.
PSPK proposed the “Bread for Breakfast” project. It is the Penang Benggali Bread baked by the trained single mothers and vulnerable women from the low-income community. They are specially trained in baking this Penang Benggali Bread at PSPK Bakery Training Centre. This bread is produced by a core team of 12 women with the help of another 22 women based on the production scale. It is called the PSPK Mothers Benggali Bread Enterprise – a social enterprise. This is a registered business operating with a social cause aligned with Sustainable Development Goals – Decent Work and Economic Growth (8) and Reduce Inequalities (10).
“Bread for Breakfast” is a bottom-up proposed project. The needs for bread are high and the capacity to produce the bread is also available in a large scale. There are 1300 families identified to be the beneficiaries of this project. The beneficiaries are the needy local Malaysian from the poor low-income families, staying in low-cost flats, individuals depending on their daily wages, single mothers with their children, refugee, asylum-seekers, migrants, indigenous people.
All these people facing urban poverty and affected by the COVID-19 Movement Control Order. Most of them are unable to go to work and live with no earning and saving. PSPK will be distributing the loaves of bread to the identified beneficiaries with safety precautions and compliance with rules during the lockdown.
This project will be helpful and beneficial for desperate families seeking for help and also the baking women’s team as they will be able to generate income to sustain their life in this desperate and crucial situation.
We hope you would be able to sponsor your affordable numbers to support the needy communities in this humanitarian effort to provide them with these loaves of bread. We believe your support means so much to the needy and we are profoundly grateful to have you with us.
