THE PROBLEM

Coral reefs play an essential role in the marine ecosystem, especially in the Malaysian coastal waters of Sabah. It provides a source of food, habitats and marine diversity, allowing marine life to thrive along the reefs. In addition, corals are living organisms that require a pristine environment to survive and sustain themselves, making them susceptible to marine pollution, fish bombing, climate change and rising sea temperatures. This poses risks to the Malaysian reef that threatens the marine ecosystem while destroying the unique environment and precious conservation efforts.

THE SOLUTION

AIESEC in Universiti Malaysia Sabah is a not-for-profit youth organization based in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah that manages projects based on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) recognized by the United Nations. Our project, Nature Warrior focuses on SDG 14, Life Below Water which aims to enhance plastic awareness, and turtle and coral conservation through volunteerism by providing workshops, Nature talks and training sessions to ensure expertise was downscaled towards the audience of 14 years old ad 15 years old students. We aim to find external partners to obtain financial support and provide necessary guidance to volunteers in order to achieve sustainable impacts on the public.

Kudat Turtle Conservation Society (KTCS) is a non-government organization that conducts turtle and coral conservation efforts in the coastal waters of Kudat, Sabah. We focus on raising awareness of the local community on the sea turtle conservation issues as well as promoting and increasing participation of the local community in nature conservation efforts. In addition to that, coral planting was conducted via the placement of coral frames which aims to facilitate coral fragment growth. We aim to fundraise financial assistance to build coral frames and sustain our conservation effort operations which allow more construction of coral frames and dropoffs in areas in need of coral growth.

THE IMPACT

In conjunction to crowdfund financial support for the sustainability of Nature Warrior, a portion of the lump sum would be donated toward the coral planting efforts of KTCS. This allows for better sustainability of either project, especially from a financial standpoint which eases tight operation budgets to sustain our projects. We hope to provide a healthy and conducive environment to sustain our projects in the long run with at least 1 coral frame constructed and enhanced public awareness of marine conservation efforts.

About the Organization/Project behind this Campaign

AIESEC in Universiti Malaysia Sabah

Our Identity

AIESEC is the world's largest non-profit youth-run organization. It is an international non-governmental not-for-profit organization that provides young people with leadership development, cross-cultural global internships, and volunteer exchange experiences across the globe. The organization focuses on empowering young leaders to make a positive impact on society through actions.

Our Vision

AIESEC strives for Peace and Fulfilment of Humankind's Potential as an organization.

In today’s context, ‘Peace’ does not necessarily mean only avoiding war. Peace can symbolize a world that does not have conflicts that arise from cultural, religious, or other aspects of differences in humanity. Peace can also symbolize being in harmony with yourself. AIESEC strives to build a world where people can work towards their own understanding of peace while respecting and understanding the views of others.

Through Fulfilment of Humankind’s Potential, AIESEC strives for a world where people can be the best version of themselves.

Our Action

We place our confidence in youth because they have the passion, dynamism and entrepreneurial spirit that are needed to shape the future. They have the responsibility to improve tomorrow by choosing who they will be today. Hence, AIESEC is a platform for young leaders to run projects that are aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to ensure its relevance to the local community needs. We aim to be part of the solution for the betterment of Malaysia.
